About the Summit

Baku hosts the 2nd Summit of World Religious Leaders according to the Order of the president of the Republic of Azerbaijan Mr. Ilham Aliyev.

In the Republic of Azerbaijan, widely accepted as one of the centers of multiculturalism in the world, it has become a tradition to hold high-level international events, promoting the Inter-civilizational and Interreligious cooperation. Since 2008, discussions of various humanitarian issues of concern to the international community are going on in the framework of the “Baku process”, dedicated to the improvement of the Intercultural dialogue. In this light, the “Baku World Summit of Religious Leaders”, held in 2010, has also to be considered as a significant contribution to the development of Inter-civilizational cooperation, creating an atmosphere of mutual respect and trust among them. Meanwhile, aiming to consistently promote the ideas of Interreligious and Intercivilizational cooperation, according to the initiative of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan His Excellency Ilham Aliyev, the Baku International Center for Interfaith and Intercivilizational Cooperation (BCIC), composed of prominent religious and public figures of the world, was established under the Caucasus Muslim Board.

The Summit will be hold in the frame of jubilee celebrations dedicated to the 70th birthday of Sheikh-ul-Islam Allahshukur Pashazade and 40th anniversary of his activity as a Sheikh-ul-Islam, and will take place with participation of influential religious and public figures representing various regions of the world. We believe that he Summit will be a fruitful platform for discussing contemporary challenges of the globalizing world and challenging ethno-confessional processes taking place in various regions of the Earth.
